Stop Confusing Sport-Specific Training With
Performance Training

A parent walks into the gym and asks a question we hear all the time:

“My son plays basketball. Do you do basketball-specific training?”

A few hours later, another parent asks the same question about football.

Then soccer.

Then lacrosse.

Then baseball, softball, volleyball, field hockey, wrestling, and track.

The sport changes, but the concern is usually the same.

Parents want to know if the training will actually carry over. They want to know if their athlete will get faster, stronger, more explosive, more confident, and better prepared for their sport. They want to make sure they are not wasting time on training that does not matter.

That is completely understandable.

But here is where many parents get stuck:

They have been sold the idea that if training does not look exactly like their child’s sport, then it is not helping their child’s sport.

That is not true.

Sport-specific training and performance training are not the same thing.

They serve two different purposes.

Sport practice builds the skills of the sport.

Performance training builds the athlete.

And when parents understand the difference, they can make better decisions for their child’s development, health, confidence, and long-term success.

What Is Sport-Specific Training?

Sport-specific training is training that directly develops the skills, tactics, and technical demands of a sport.

For a basketball player, that includes shooting, passing, dribbling, defending, rebounding, and understanding spacing.

For a football player, that includes blocking, tackling, route running, coverage reads, position work, and play recognition.

For a baseball or softball player, that includes throwing, hitting, fielding, base running, and game situations.

For a volleyball player, that includes serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and court positioning.

For lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, wrestling, track, and every other sport, there are also specific technical skills that need to be practiced repeatedly.

That is what sport practice is for.

The purpose of practice is to develop the athlete’s skill within the sport.

Performance training is different.

What Is Performance Training?

Performance training builds the physical qualities that help an athlete express their sport skills better.

At Prepare for Performance, we are not trying to make the weight room look like basketball, soccer, football, baseball, volleyball, lacrosse, or any other sport.

We are trying to help athletes become better athletes.

That means developing qualities like:

  • Speed
  • Acceleration
  • Max velocity
  • Change of direction
  • Deceleration
  • Jumping
  • Landing
  • Strength
  • Power
  • Coordination
  • Mobility
  • Core control
  • Conditioning
  • Injury resilience

These qualities are not exclusive to one sport.

A basketball player needs to accelerate, stop, jump, land, absorb contact, and change direction.

So does a soccer player.

So does a lacrosse player.

So does a football player.

So does a volleyball player.

So does a field hockey player.

So does a baseball or softball player.

The sport changes, but the foundation of athleticism is often very similar.

That is why performance training does not need to mimic the sport to transfer to the sport.

Why Parents Get Confused

The phrase “sport-specific training” sounds advanced.

It sounds personalized.

It sounds like the missing piece.

So when a parent hears that their athlete needs “basketball-specific,” “football-specific,” “baseball-specific,” or “volleyball-specific” training, it feels logical.

But here is the issue:

A lot of what gets marketed as sport-specific training is really just more sport practice, more repetitive movement, or random drills dressed up to look like the sport.

That does not always solve the athlete’s real problem.

If an athlete cannot sprint efficiently, they do not just need more sport drills.

They need speed development.

If an athlete cannot stop and change direction safely, they do not just need more small-sided games.

They need deceleration and change-of-direction training.

If an athlete gets pushed off the ball, knocked out of position, or loses physical battles, they do not just need more skill work.

They need strength.

If an athlete jumps but lands poorly, they do not just need more jumping in games.

They need landing mechanics, eccentric strength, and body control.

If an athlete breaks down late in games, they do not just need more tournaments.

They need better conditioning, recovery, and physical preparation.

Performance training addresses the physical qualities that practice alone often does not fully develop.

The Data on Youth Sports Should Make Parents Pay Attention

Youth sports have become more serious, more expensive, and more specialized.

But that does not mean athletes are always developing better.

According to the Aspen Institute’s Project Play, 55.4% of youth ages 6 to 17 participated in sports as of 2023, and even more played in 2024 according to Sports & Fitness Industry Association data reported by Project Play. Project Play also reported that the federal government’s Healthy People 2030 goal is for 63% of children to participate in organized sports by 2030. Project Play also reported that in 2024, 6% more children ages 6 to 17 played a team sport at least once compared to 2023, and that 65% of youth ages 6 to 17 tried sports at least once in 2024. However, the same report noted that regular participation continues to be a concern, especially among teenagers. You can review those numbers in Project Play’s Participation Trends report.

That matters because many athletes are leaving sports right around the age when training, confidence, and physical development become even more important.

In a 2026 Aspen Institute national survey, former youth athletes reported stopping organized sports at an average age of 12.93 years old, with more than one-third quitting between ages 12, 13, and 14. So the question is not just:

“How do we make kids better at their sport right now?”

The better question is:

“How do we help athletes develop, stay healthy, build confidence, and continue playing long enough to reach their potential?”

That is where performance training becomes important.

Early Specialization Is Not Always the Advantage Parents Think It Is

Parents often worry that if their child does not specialize early, they will fall behind.

That fear is understandable.

But the research does not support the idea that early specialization is necessary for most athletes.

A review by Jayanthi and colleagues found that, for most sports, there is no evidence that intense training and specialization before puberty are necessary to achieve elite status. The same review also noted that risks of early sport specialization can include higher injury rates, psychological stress, and quitting sports at a young age. That is a major point.

For most athletes, doing more of the same sport year-round is not automatically the best path.

In fact, it can create problems.

The American Academy of Pediatrics published a clinical report to help pediatricians counsel athletes and parents about sports specialization and intensive training. This does not mean sport practice is bad.

It does not mean athletes should not work on their skills.

It means parents need to understand that sport skill development and athletic development are not the same thing.

Both matter.

But they are not interchangeable.

More Sport Does Not Always Mean Better Development

A young athlete may already be getting plenty of sport-specific work.

They may have team practice, private lessons, games, tournaments, camps, showcases, and club seasons.

What they may not have is a structured plan to improve how their body moves and performs.

That is the gap performance training fills.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association recommends that young athletes should not participate in organized sport or activity more hours per week than their age. In other words, a 12-year-old should not participate in more than 12 hours per week of organized sport and activity. NATA also recommends that young athletes take at least two days off per week from organized training and competition. Johns Hopkins Medicine also states that injury risk, especially overuse injury risk, increases when athletes participate in a sport more than 16 hours per week or more hours per week than their age, and when they play the same sport year-round without a gap season. That should make parents pause.

If an athlete is already overloaded with sport practices and games, adding more sport-like training may not be the solution.

The athlete may need a different stimulus.

They may need better movement.

They may need strength.

They may need controlled exposure to jumping and landing.

They may need sprint mechanics.

They may need deceleration work.

They may need recovery.

They may need a plan that supports the sport instead of simply adding more repetitive stress from the sport.

High Specialization Can Increase Injury Risk

One of the biggest issues with chasing sport-specific training too early is that young athletes can become overexposed to the same movement patterns.

Throwing athletes throw more.

Jumping athletes jump more.

Cutting athletes cut more.

Kicking athletes kick more.

Running athletes run more.

Over time, if the athlete is not building strength, coordination, mobility, recovery habits, and movement variety, the body can start to break down.

A study by Jayanthi and colleagues found that young athletes who specialize in a single sport have an independent risk of injury and serious overuse injury. You can review the study here: Sports-Specialized Intensive Training and the Risk of Injury in Young Athletes.

Another study by Post and colleagues found that high levels of sport specialization were associated with a history of injuries, independent of age, sex, and weekly organized sport volume. The authors also noted that athletes who exceeded volume recommendations were more likely to report a history of overuse injuries. This is why performance training matters.

A good performance program gives athletes what the sport may not give them enough of:

  • Strength through different ranges of motion
  • Movement variety
  • Landing mechanics
  • Deceleration ability
  • Trunk control
  • Tissue capacity
  • Power development
  • Recovery awareness
  • Balanced physical development

The goal is not to scare parents away from sport.

The goal is to help parents understand that more sport-like activity is not always the answer.

Performance Training Does Not Need to Look Like the Sport to Transfer

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in youth sports.

Parents often think that if the training does not visually resemble the sport, it will not carry over.

But transfer does not come from making every drill look like the game.

Transfer comes from improving the physical qualities that the athlete uses in the game.

A squat does not look like a jump shot, but stronger legs can help an athlete jump, land, hold position, and absorb force.

A sprint drill does not look like a football route, but better acceleration mechanics can help an athlete create separation.

A deceleration drill does not look exactly like a volleyball rally, but better braking ability can help an athlete stop, change direction, and stay under control.

A medicine ball throw may not look like a lacrosse shot, baseball swing, volleyball spike, or tennis stroke, but rotational power can help athletes produce force through the ground, hips, trunk, and upper body.

A single-leg strength exercise may not look like a soccer play, basketball drive, or field hockey cut, but single-leg strength matters when an athlete cuts, lands, accelerates, or absorbs contact.

Good performance training does not copy the sport.

It supports the sport.

The Real Goal Is Building a Bigger Athletic Toolbox

The best athletes usually have more than sport skill.

They have a bigger athletic toolbox.

They can sprint.

They can stop.

They can jump.

They can land.

They can rotate.

They can brace.

They can absorb force.

They can produce force.

They can move in different directions.

They can adapt.

This matters because sports are chaotic.

Athletes rarely move in perfect patterns during competition. They react to opponents, teammates, space, contact, speed, fatigue, and pressure.

A bigger movement toolbox gives them more options.

That is why performance training should not be reduced to:

“Does this look like my sport?”

The better question is:

“Is this building a physical quality my athlete needs in order to perform better?”

Practice Builds the Skill. Training Builds the Engine.

Think of sport like driving a car.

Practice teaches the athlete how to drive.

Performance training builds the engine, brakes, suspension, frame, and control system.

If the engine is weak, the athlete cannot accelerate.

If the brakes are poor, the athlete cannot decelerate.

If the frame is unstable, the athlete cannot handle contact.

If the suspension is poor, the athlete cannot absorb force.

If the control system is limited, the athlete cannot move efficiently under pressure.

You can keep giving the athlete more driving lessons, but at some point, the physical machine needs to be upgraded.

That is performance training.

What Parents Should Look For Instead

Instead of asking:

“Is this sport-specific?”

Parents should ask better questions.

Is the program helping my athlete get faster?

Is it teaching them how to accelerate and sprint properly?

Is it improving their ability to stop, cut, and change direction?

Is it developing strength in a safe and age-appropriate way?

Is it teaching proper jumping and landing mechanics?

Is it helping them build power?

Is it improving coordination and body control?

Is it reducing unnecessary injury risk?

Is it giving them confidence?

Is it supporting their sport schedule instead of just adding more stress?

Those questions are much more valuable than asking whether every drill looks like the sport.

That is what performance training is designed to build.

Parents do not need to stop caring about their child’s sport.

They need to stop confusing sport-specific training with performance training.

Sport-specific work has a place.

That place is mostly practice, skill sessions, film study, and competition.

Performance training has a different job.

Its job is to build the athlete underneath the sport.

So the next time someone says your child needs more sport-specific training, ask a better question:

“What physical qualities does my athlete need to improve?”

Because when athletes become faster, stronger, more powerful, more coordinated, and more resilient, they are better prepared for whatever sport they play.

Sport practice builds the sport.
